Duke Set to Host ITA Carolina Region Championships

DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke men's tennis team will host the ITA Carolina Regional this weekend at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C. More than 128 competitors will be in action as the tournament stretches from Friday through Tuesday.

"We are looking forward to hosting the ITA Regional at Cary Tennis Park again this year," Duke head coach Ramsey Smith said. "I'm excited for the opportunities we will have to compete against the best players from our Carolinas Region over the next few days."

Seven Blue Devils will compete this weekend: freshmen Garrett Johns, Samuel Rubell, Andrew Zhang and Michael Heller, juniors Edu Guell and Sean Sculley and senior Nick Stachowiak. Duke's seven representatives are up from last year's four in the same tournament.

"I've been pleased with our preparation and our guys have been working hard and playing well," Smith said. "It will be the first ITA Regionals for most of our young team.

Five of Duke's seven representatives were seeded on Thursday during the draw creation: Stachowiak (5), Guell (7), Johns (8), Zhang (13) and Sculley (14).

Play will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Friday and all players are guaranteed two singles matches throughout the day. The doubles portion of the event will begin on Saturday.

The singles and doubles winners from each of the 12 USTA/ITA regions advance to the 2019 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, held November 6-10, at the Newport Beach Tennis Club and The Tennis Club at Newport Beach Country Club in Newport Beach, Calif.

Following this weekend's qualifier event, the Blue Devils travel to Lakewood Ranch, Fla. for the Dick Vitale Intercollegiate the weekend of Nov. 1-3.
