CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – On a day that featured rain for most of the round and the Duke women's golf team storming back to take the team lead, the Blue Devils ended up concluding the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational in a tie for third at the 6,379-yard, par 72 Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.
After opening day one in ninth, Duke jumped up the leaderboard to fifth following day two. The Blue Devils were even par through approximately 12 holes Sunday and took the team lead at 12-under-par a little after 1:00 p.m., but dropped shots on holes 16-18 to fall back. Duke turned in rounds of 293, 272 and 290 for a season-best nine-under, 855.
"We played a lot of great golf in this tournament," said Duke head coach
Dan Brooks. "Our first day hurt us. We'll continue to train as we have been doing and will be ready for East Lake."
Michigan State won the team title with a 12-under, 852, while Alabama (853), Ohio State (855), Duke (855) and Wake Forest (857) rounded out the top five teams.
Junior
Jaravee Boonchant continued her solid play with a tied for third place ledger as she carded rounds of 71, 66 and 72 for a seven-under, 209. She finished only four shots off the lead as Valery Plata of Michigan State concluded with an 11-under, 205, to win the individual title.
Boonchant, a product of Bangkok, Thailand, opened her day on hole three and drained a 30-foot birdie on No. 7 to get to one-under-par. She would go on to par the next eight holes, before suffering a double-bogey on the 361-yard, par four 16th. Boonchant sank a 10-foot putt for birdie on 18 to return to even par and then parred her final two holes to finish with a 72. She hit a team-best 17 greens, 11 fairways and rolled 34 putts.
"I would say I stayed more patient than the first two tournaments," said Boonchant. "Even though I made a bogey, I still moved on and trusted my game. Even though today I had a double on No. 16, I did not give up and kept trusting my game. Eventually the ball is going to drop."
Over the last two tournaments, Boonchant has shot 10-under-par with six straight rounds of even or under par. With her three rounds of even or under par in Chapel Hill, she now owns 47 for her career to move from 10th to seventh on Duke's all-time charts. Boonchant's 14 career rounds in the 60s also moves into sole possession of 10th on the Blue Devil record books.
"I'm proud of Jaravee [Boonchant]," added Brooks. "The first day she didn't strike the ball real well, but figured it out and all almost won individually. She consistently plays with a lot of resolve."
Junior
Miranda Wang carded rounds of 71, 70 and 73 for a two-under, 214, as she tied for 13th overall, which was her lowest finish since her freshman campaign. On Sunday, Wang bookended birdies on her opening hole, No. 4, and her closing hole, No. 3, while registering 28 putts, 10 greens and seven fairways.
Wang, who is from Beijing, China, hit her 9-iron from 120 yards to 15 feet on the 370-yard, par four fourth and then hit her 58-degree wedge from 56 yards to 15th feet on the 522-yard, par five third for her birdies. She was two-under on holes 1-9 and three-over on holes 10-18 in the final round.
A day after carding a bogey-free, 66, sophomore
Gina Kim signed for an even-par, 72, Sunday as she finished tied for 23rd with a one-under, 215. Playing in her home city of Chapel Hill, Kim collected a team-best five birdies on the day, including a 27-footer on No. 14 and a 30-footer on No. 16. She hit 14 greens, 12 fairways and had 31 putts.
Duke freshmen
Erica Shepherd and
Megan Furtney closed the weekend in a tie for 52nd and tied for 57th, respectively. Shepherd, a product of Greenwood, Ind., signed for back-to-back rounds of 73 to finish play. She birdied her first hole of the day, the 505-yard, par five sixth as she hit her 3-wood from 240 yards to 20 yards. Shepherd hit her 60-degree wedge to two feet and sank the putt. For the day, she hit 14 greens, five fairways and notched 33 putts. Her 42 pars over the 54 holes was the third-most of the field.
Furtney, who is from St. Charles, Ill., held an even-par ledger through 12 holes Sunday, but struggled on her way in to finish with a 78. She drained four birdies on the day, including a chip-in from 10 yards with a 58-degree wedge on No. 12. Furtney added a 30-footer for birdie on No. 15, 50-foot birdie on No. 5 and a 15-footer for birdie on No. 6. She hit 11 greens and had 31 putts.
For the 54 holes, Duke held a 19-under-ledger on holes 1-9.
The Blue Devils were playing without lone senior
Ana Belac as she is getting set to compete in LPGA Stage II Qualifying in Venice, Fla.
Duke will next compete in the East Lake Cup Oct. 28-30 in Atlanta, Ga.
