Cassese to be Inducted into U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame
Former Duke captain and All-American midfielder Kevin Cassese will be inducted into the U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame Saturday, Sept. 29. A three-time All-American, including two first-team selections in 2002 and 2003, Cassese will be inducted as a truly exceptional player. In addition, he took home the Donald MacLaughlin award as the nation's top midfielder in 2002. Cassese also garnered All-ACC recognition three times and was the conference's Player of the Year after guiding the Blue Devils to the first to two consecutive ACC titles.
The current Lehigh head coach, Cassese was also incredibly successful when donning the U.S. crest. He was a member of the 2002, 2006 and 2010 U.S. Men's National Teams, winning the gold medal twice and serving as captain in 2010. In the professional ranks, Cassese enjoyed a seven-year professional career in Major League Lacrosse. He was voted to the all-star team in 2005 and 2006 and was the all-star MVP in 2006.
Blue Devils Open Fall Practice
Duke held its first official fall practice Monday morning. The Blue Devils, welcoming back 35 players from last year's squad, have been conditioning and hitting the weight room hard in recent weeks and now get the opportunity to pick up their sticks and play lacrosse. With the new rules, the Blue Devils will scrimmage more this fall, but will not be seeing outside competition per usual. Fans can stay tuned for intrasquad scrimmage dates and times in the coming weeks.
Falk Joins the Blue Devils from Virginia
Jack Falk joined the Duke squad after a solid career at Virginia. The Washington D.C., native was rated as the No. 67 recruit coming out of high school by Inside Lacrosse and was an outstanding shortstick defensive midfielder for the Cavaliers. He played in all 30 games his freshman and sophomore season and picked up 21 ground balls overall. Falk most recently played in two games in 2017, grabbing one ground ball.
Eleven Freshmen Arrive in Durham
Head coach John Danowski welcomed 11 freshmen to the squad at the end of August. The group hails from eight different states and seven are ranked among Inside Lacrosse's top 100 freshmen, including three in the top 30 and six in the top 50. Overall, Inside Lacrosse ranks Duke's incoming crew sixth.
“Big midfielders, defensive depth and quality specialists describe the Blue Devils' incoming group. Garrett Leadmon (DeMatha, Md.) is among the best middies in the country, and Owen Caputo (Middle Creek, N.C. — pictured) is a refined all-around player. Meanwhile Jadon Kerry (Chanhassen, Minn.) and Griffin Catlett (McDonogh, Md.) are interesting prospects. Wilson Stephenson (Brunswick, Conn.; Prime Time), Braden Burke (John Jay, N.Y.; Prime Time) and Frank Marinello (Chaminade, N.Y.) are all big defensemen. Jordan Ginder (Brunswick, Conn.) will join a good stable of FOGOs, and Andrew Bonafede (Chaminade, N.Y.) will compete for time in goal”

Alumni Update
- Justin Guterding was taken in the third round and with the 28th pick overall by the Philadelphia Wings in the 2018-19 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft Tuesday night. Guterding will make his professional indoor lacrosse debut Dec. 15 against the Buffalo Bandits. In his first Major League Lacrosse season, Guterding played in nine games and scored 18 goals and 10 assists for 28 points. He finished his season with four goals and an assist and had five games with at least four points.
- Brendan Fowler was one of 39 players recently picked by U.S. Indoor head coach Regy Thorpe to represent the United States at the Lacrosse All Stars North American Invitational. Fowler is a member of the White Roster and will be battling for a right to continue to don the red, white and blue. After this weekend's tournament, which will also include Wednesday and Sunday practice sessions for the U.S. teams, Thorpe will name approximately 30 players to move onto the training team.
- Recent graduate Greg Shea is taking all of the knowledge he picked up during his time and Durham and sharing it with the youths in the greater Seattle area. He will be hosting a clinic in Bainbridge Sunday, Sept. 30. He is excited to give back to a sport that gave him so much during his time both at Bainbridge High School and Duke.
