DURHAM, N.C. – Duke hits the road for the first time this season, traveling to Baton Rouge, La., to take part in LSU's Tiger Classic August 31 – September 1.
A four-team tournament held at LSU's Pete Maravich Assembly Center, the Tiger Classic features South Florida and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in addition to the Blue Devils and host Tigers. Duke (0-2, 0-0 ACC) opens play against USF (3-0, 0-0 AAC) at 11 a.m., Friday, August 31. The Blue Devils take on LSU (1-2, 0-0 SEC) later Friday evening, taking the court at 8:30 p.m., then wrap up the weekend at 12 p.m., Saturday, September 1 against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (0-4, 0-0 Southland).
Duke did not shy away from a challenge its opening weekend, facing a top 10 team twice in No. 8 BYU. Despite falling to the Cougars in both matches, the Blue Devils featured several standout performances opening weekend.
After missing all but six matches a year ago, middle blocker Leah Meyer returned in dominant fashion. Meyer totaled 18 kills and posted a tremendous .552 hitting percentage over the two matches while also contributing a team-best seven blocks. 2017 ACC All-Freshman Team outside hitter Payton Schwantz added 16 kills and posted a double-double in Saturday's contest.
Four Blue Devils made their Duke debuts in graduate student transfer Andie Shelton and freshmen Ade Owokoniran, Lily Cooper and Mackenzie Cole. Shelton did a little bit of everything for Duke, accruing 37 assists, 10 kills, 14 digs, four blocks and a team-best four service aces this past weekend. All three freshmen earned spots in the starting lineup with Owokinran leading the team in kills both matches. Cooper matched Meyer for the team-lead in blocks over the weekend (7.0), while libero Cole picked up a team-high 30 digs including a 20-dig effort Saturday.
South Florida opened the 2018 campaign with wins over San Jose State, Jacksonville and Stony Brook at the Bulls' tournament in Tampa, Fla. Junior outside hitter Jac'cara Walker and freshman libero CC Clausen were named to the American Weekly Honor Roll after standout performances at the USF Invitational.
After falling in its first two matches of the season, LSU earned a 3-0 win over Texas State to conclude the Hampton Inn & Suites Waco North Baylor Invitational in Waco, Texas. Friday evening's matchup between Duke and LSU marks the eighth meeting in program history between the two schools with the Tigers holding a 4-3 advantage.
After an 0-3 weekend at South Carolina's tournament, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi most recently dropped a five-set home match to UT-Rio Grande Valley this past Tuesday.
After returning from Louisiana, Duke kicks off a string of seven straight home matches starting September 4 against UNC Greensboro.
