DURHAM, N.C. – Duke junior cornerback Mark Gilbert was selected to the USA TODAY Sports Preseason All-America second team Tuesday, according to a release by the publication. Gilbert has earned six preseason All-America accolades this fall.
A 6-1, 175-pound native of Fayetteville, N.C., Gilbert was a first team Street & Smith's College Football Yearbook pick, received second team nods from Athlon Sports, Lindy's Sports and Sporting News and received a fourth team selection by Phil Steele's College Football Preview.
Lindy's tabbed Gilbert as the fourth best cornerback in the country. Gilbert is also a unanimous preseason first team All-ACC pick by Athlon, ESPN, Lindy's, Phil Steele and Street & Smith's.
Last fall, Gilbert recorded 35 tackles, 3.0 tackles for lost yardage, six interceptions and 15 pass breakups. He was a first team All-ACC selection as the leading vote-getter among cornerbacks in the all-league balloting after leading the conference in total passes defended (21) and total passes defended per game (1.62) while tying for third nationally in interceptions, total passes defended and total passes defended per game. His 21 total passes defended set the Duke single-season record, surpassing Erwin Sampson's 19 in 1989.
Gilbert posted two interceptions against both Northwestern and Wake Forest in 2017. He sealed Duke's 31-23 win over the Demon Deacons, which secured bowl eligibility, with an interception at the 1:32 mark of the fourth period. Both interceptions at Wake Forest came on throws from Demon Deacon quarterback John Wolford, who led the ACC and ranked 10th nationally in pass efficiency rating and was intercepted just six times on the season.
In 25 career games (16 starts), Gilbert has registered 53 tackles, 5.0 TFL, six INTs and 17 PBUs. Among active players in the ACC, he enters the 2018 season ranking tied for fourth in interceptions, tied for fourth in pass breakups and tied for fourth in total passes defended.
Duke opens the 2018 season at home on Friday, August 31 against Army West Point. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m., and the game will be televised by ESPNU.
