DURHAM, N.C. – Duke redshirt junior quarterback Daniel Jones has been selected to the preseason watch list for the Maxwell Award, an honor presented to the top player in the country by the Maxwell Football Club. The selection marks Jones' second consecutive year on the preseason watch list.
Jones returns for his third campaign as Duke's starting quarterback and was tabbed a team captain in 2017. In 25 career games (25 starts), he has completed 527-of-883 (.597) passes for 5,527 yards with 30 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. He owns a career pass efficiency rating of 118.94. On the ground, Jones has rushed 302 times for 1,004 yards (3.32) and 14 touchdowns.
He opens 2018 as one of two active quarterbacks nationally with 5,500 or more career passing yards and 1,000 or more career rushing yards, joining Syracuse's Eric Dungey. Jones will also enter the 2018 season with active streaks of four games with one or more rushing touchdowns and three contests with two or more passing scores. Jones, a 6-5, 220-pound native of Charlotte, N.C., was named the 2017 Quick Lane Bowl MVP and was an ACC All-Bowl Team choice by ESPN. During the Quick Lane Bowl, Jones set the game's record for pass completions (27) while matching bowl game's standard for touchdown passes (2). On Duke's bowl game charts, his Quick Lane Bowl totals rank second for rushing yards by a quarterback (86), tied for second for rushing attempts by a quarterback (16), tied for second for total touchdown responsibility (3), third for touchdown passes, third for total offensive yards (338), fourth for pass completions and fifth for passing yards (252).
The leader of a multifaceted offense, Jones was a big contributor to the Blue Devils' ground game, joining Shaun Wilson (818) and Brittain Brown (701) to form the first trio in Duke history to post 500 or more rushing yards each. Jones coupled with Wilson (6) and Brown (7) to form the fifth trio in Blue Devil history to compile five or more rushing TDs each and teamed with Wilson and Brown to form one of two ACC trios with 500 or more rushing yards and six or more rushing touchdowns each, joining Clemson's Travis Etinne (744 & 13), Tavien Feaster (659 & 7) and Kelly Bryant (646 & 11).
The Maxwell Award, named in honor of Robert W. "Tiny" Maxwell, has been given to America's College Player of the Year since 1937. Maxwell's contributions to the game of football were extensive, including time as a player, a sportswriter and an official. Baker Mayfield capped a brilliant 2017 season at Oklahoma by becoming the third Sooner to win the Maxwell Award, joining Tommy McDonald (1956) and Jason White (2004).
