MADISON, Wisc. – Boosted by a seven-under-par, 65, Tuesday, by senior Leona Maguire, the top-seeded Duke women's golf team jumped into first at the NCAA Madison Regional as the Blue Devils carded a team-best nine-under, 279, and holds an eight-stroke lead with 18 holes remaining at the 6,313-yard, par 72 University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wisc.
Maguire, who hails from Cavan, Ireland, registered eight birdies on the day and turned in the tied for second-lowest 18-hole score in Duke NCAA regional history (65). She ranks tied with Virada Nirapathpongporn, who totaled a 65 in the 2001 regional in Chapel Hill, N.C., and ranks behind Amanda Blumenherst's nine-under, 63, in 2007 in Baton Rouge, La.
“Starting off on the first side, I just felt like I played really well,” said Maguire. “I played the par fives really well, giving myself really good birdie chances on all of them. I birdied four out of five of them. I only missed one green today, giving myself a lot of birdie chances. That is something I kind of struggled with yesterday. I didn't feel like I played all that bad yesterday. I just didn't give myself enough chances. The goal today was to give myself as many chances as I could and I took advantage of quite a few of them, which was nice.”
As a team, Duke moved ahead of first round leader Virginia with its second consecutive under par ledger. The Blue Devils backed up its five-under score of 283 Monday with a nine-under, 279, and holds a 14-under, 562, through 36 holes. Virginia is second with a six-under, 570, while Southern California (573), Arizona State (574), Oregon State (574), Illinois (577), Northwestern (577) and Ohio State (577) round out the top six teams.
“I saw a lot of smart golf today,” said Brooks. “It was windy and I saw some great choices. I think that is why we were able to gain some strokes.”
Through Wednesday's third round, the top six teams will advance to the NCAA Championship in Stillwater, Okla.
“It is good,” commented Brooks on holding the team lead. “What we talk about in this situation is preparation for nationals. We want to be a team that if we get ahead or behind we keep our foot on the pedal. It is always good prep no matter what situation you are in. You use it for the next event.”
With her seven-under score, Maguire jumped from tied 43rd after day one to tied third overall. She enters the final day of play with a six-under, 138, which is four shots behind Oregon State's Nicole Schroeder (-10, 134). Erin Harper of Indiana (-6, 138) is second and Maguire is tied with Ohio State's Jaclyn Lee.
Maguire had everything dialed in from the beginning Tuesday as she birdied the second hole and then collected four straight birdies from 6-9 to make the turn at five-under, 31. Her lone green missed on the day came on No. 11 and she suffered a bogey, but Maguire came back to birdie No. 11 and No. 14 to get to six-under-par. On the 160-yard, par three 17th, Maguire stepped up and sank a 45-foot birdie to move to seven-under.
It marked her 31st career round in the 60s, which is a new Duke career record moving past Blumenherst (30). For the day, Maguire hit 13 fairways, 17 greens and had 28 putts.
With a two-under, 70, in round two, sophomore Ana Belac moved into a tie for fifth with a four-under, 140. Belac, who is from Portoroz, Slovenia, had a great round and could have been much lower, but she couldn't get many birdie putts to drop. She collected birdies on the par five second hole and then two-putted for birdie on the par five 11th. Belac finally was able to sink a long birdie on the 374-yard, par four 18th as she hit a 40-footer. She rolled 34 putts and missed only two greens all day, while hitting 12 fairways.
For the second straight day, freshman Jaravee Boonchant turned in an even-par, 72, and is tied 24th overall with 18 holes remaining. Boonchant, a native of Bangkok, Thailand, pulled her drive to the left of the first fairway and suffered a bogey to start, but came back to birdie the par five second hole to get back to even. She added a two-putt birdie on No. 9, but then suffered a three-putt bogey on No. 11, before sinking another birdie on the 12th hole. Boonchant turned in five pars and a bogey on No. 17 to close her day. She hit 14 greens, 11 fairways and had 33 putts.
A day after signing for a 68, junior Virginia Elena Carta had a 76 and is tied 24th through 36 holes. She notched three birdies on No. 9, No. 11 and No. 16, but a double-bogey on No. 17 dropped her score back. The Udine, Italy, product hit 12 greens, 11 fairways and had 36 putts in the second round.
Senior Lisa Maguire counted her second consecutive score as she registered an even-par, 72, which was the lowest ledger in NCAA play over her four-year career. Maguire opened her day with a sand save for par on No. 1 and then suffered her first of only two bogeys on the afternoon on the fourth hole as her drive went left out of the fairway. She two-putted for birdie on No. 9 to make the turn at even par. Maguire, who is from Cavan, Ireland, had a bogey on No. 10 and then had five straight pars. On the par five 16th, Maguire hit her second shot into the greenside bunker, but had a great shot out to five feet and connected for birdie to get back to even. She hit 10 greens, six fairways and had 27 putts.
“I am very proud of Lisa,” said Brooks. “She is a hero. She has worked really, really hard. I am so thankful that she can see some scores from all the hard work.”
Duke turned in 19 birdies in the second round and is 21-under-par through 36 holes on the par fives.
“I am real proud of them,” commented Brooks on the nine-under day. “I am not surprised at what Leona did. She's incredibly skilled and resourceful. Everybody did great. Virginia was a little bit off today, but it is a tough course and the wind was blowing. It can get the best of somebody and it just got her a little bit early in the round.”
Duke will tee off beginning at 9:30 a.m. (ET), Wednesday in the final round with a shotgun start. The Blue Devils will be paired with Virginia, Southern California and Arizona State.
