
Alvarez Ends Season in NCAA Singles Championship

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Duke redshirt junior Nicolas Alvarez had his NCAA Singles Championship run come to an end Wednesday with a 6-2, 6-4 setback to Texas A&M's Valentin Vacherot at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
Alvarez, who was an unseeded player for the draw and ranked 19th in the latest Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association national rankings, led 1-0 in the opening set before No. 72 Vacherot responded with three consecutive victories to lead 3-1. Alvarez got a game back to trail 3-2, but Vacherot answered again with three straight wins to take the set.
The second set was even at 1-1, 2-2 and 3-3 before Vacherot broke and held to take a 5-3 advantage. Alvarez got a game back to go behind 5-4, but Vacherot took the final game for the victory.
Alvarez ends the campaign with a 15-9 overall record and 8-6 mark against nationally ranked opponents.
