Upcoming Event: Women's Golf versus Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational on October 17, 2025

STILLWATER, Okla. – Featuring an afternoon tee time to open the 2018 NCAA Championship, the fourth-ranked Duke women's golf team turned in a 10-over-par, 298, and is fifth overall following 18 holes of action at the 6,328-yard, par 72 Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla.
The Blue Devils are only seven shots behind Southern California, which turned in a three-over, 291, to lead by one stroke over Alabama (292). UCLA (294), Kent State (296), Duke (298), Northwestern (299), Louisville (301), Arizona (301), Florida State (301), Florida (303) and Washington (303) round out the top 10 teams.
“We had some bogeys coming in and with that last hole being a par five we kind of hoped to get two or three shots back,” said Duke head coach Dan Brooks. “We didn't get that but seven shots back is ok. We have three days left in the stroke play portion, which we are trying hard to win.”
Duke was only one-over-par following nine holes of action as senior Leona Maguire birdied three of her final six holes on the front to make the turn at two-under. The Blue Devils struggled on the way in with an eight-over ledger on the back to fall to 10-over. Duke featured only nine birdies on the day, including four on par fives.
“The wind was pretty consistent through the day,” said Brooks. “It picks up a little more when you come down by the lake here. It was consistent wind and it was always in the same direction. It was a little bit gusty, but the overall force wasn't any greater as the day went along. They had to think. It is a great golf course.”
The Blue Devils won't have much time to think about day one as Duke will tee off beginning at 8:30 a.m. (ET), off hole 10 Saturday morning.
Wake Forest's Jennifer Kupcho turned in a seven-under, 65, earlier in the day to set the tone, individually. She leads by three over Janet Mao of Northwestern (68).
Maguire, who hails from Cavan, Ireland, opened her day with two pars and then suffered a bogey on the 166-yard, par three third hole. She then caught fire with birdies on No. 4, No. 6 and No. 9 to make the turn at two-under, 34. On the back, Maguire had a bogey on the 11th, but came back with her fourth birdie of the day on the 502-yard, par five 14th. She closed with bogeys on No. 15 and No. 17 to finish at even par. Maguire hit 13 greens, 11 fairways and had 31 putts in round one and is tied 11th.
“It was a little mixed,” said Maguire. “I got off to a nice start. I gave myself a few chances on the front nine. It was a little iffy coming in. I played some solid golf, but this golf course, if you get out of position at all, it was pretty penal. Overall, level par is a solid round to start off with. I would have liked to be a few more under, but we have an early start tomorrow and hopefully post a low one tomorrow.”
The even par round for Maguire gives her 23 on the season and is one away from matching the Duke record held of 24 held by both Maguire (2014-15) and Amanda Blumenherst (2005-06).
Seeing action in her first NCAA Championship, freshman Jaravee Boonchant opened her round with five straight pars, before sinking a nine-foot birdie on the 350-yard, par four sixth. Unfortunately, her par putt on No. 7 rolled all the way around the cup and lipped out for bogey to drop back to even. Over her final 11 holes, Boonchant had nine pars and back-to-back bogeys on the 15th and 16th to finish with a 74. She hit 12 greens, 10 fairways and had 32 putts.
Sophomore Ana Belac struggled out of the gate with bogeys on No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5, but regrouped and played the next 10 holes at one-under with a 13-foot birdie on the 12th. After collecting two straight bogeys on No. 16 and No. 17, Belac rolled in a five-foot birdie on the par five 18th to finish with a 75. A product of Portoroz, Slovenia, Belac hit 11 fairways, 10 greens and had 30 putts.
Notching the best start to Friday's first round, senior Lisa Maguire had a great up-and-down par on the first hole and then sank a 45-foot birdie putt on the 377-yard, par four second to get to one-under. Maguire, who is from Cavan, Ireland, was one-under through five holes, after hitting only one of the first five greens. She then signed for bogeys on No. 6, No. 9, No. 10 and No. 13. She closed with a double-bogey on No. 17 and par on No. 18 to finish with a 77.
Day one didn't go the way the 2015 NCAA Individual Champion wanted, but junior Virginia Elena Carta concluded the afternoon with a two-putt birdie to finish with a 78.
“The rough was pretty thick out there,” commented Leona Maguire. “You can get a ball in there that just disappears. Fairways and greens are paramount really. Trying to give yourself as many chances as possible. Greens are pretty quick – trying to stay below the hard. You have to play some really nice golf to do well on this course.”
Along with Southern California and Stanford, Duke will open second round play at 8:30 a.m. (ET) off hole No. 10.
“We have to do a quick turnaround,” commented Brooks. “I am going to head to the range right now with a couple of them for just a couple of quick thoughts. Just rest and get ready to do it again.”
