ORLANDO, Fla. – Before the holiday break can begin, Duke women's tennis sophomore Kelly Chen has one final match as she advanced to the finals of the USTA Blizzard Wild Card Challenge in Orlando, Fla.
Tabbed No. 37 in the ITA rankings, Chen defeated No. 5 Sophie Whittle of Gonzaga (3-6, 6-3, 7-5) in semifinal action on the USTA's national campus. Chen was victorious in an ITA All-American rematch where Whittle defeated Chen in the quarterfinals of the main draw. Chen is now 9-3 overall and 5-3 versus nationally ranked foes this season.
The Cerritos, Calif., native will face No. 103 Michaela Gordon of Stanford in the finals Tuesday at 10 a.m.
The women's champion will earn a spot in the main draw of a 2019 $60K tournament, while the men's winner will receive a main-draw wild card to the Orlando ATP 80 Challenger event that starts Dec. 31. Along with wild cards, the student-athletes also will be competing for a guaranteed spot on the 2019 Collegiate National Team. A member of the squad receives grant money to travel to professional tournaments and coaching from USTA Player Development staff.
