SURPRISE, Ariz. – Junior Meible Chi and sophomore Kelly Chen dominated the courts Wednesday on the opening day of the 2018 Oracle ITA Fall National Championships at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex in Surprise, Ariz.
Chen, tabbed No. 12 in the ITA preseason poll and the fifth seed in the tournament, was first on the court for the Blue Devils and came away with a 7-6 (8), 6-1 victory over Stanford's No. 47 Caroline Lampl in the singles main draw round of 64. The Cerritos, Calif., native is now 6-1 overall this fall.
For the second time this fall, Chi defeated 11th-ranked Carla Touly this morning in the round of 64. Chi, ranked No. 31 and the seventh seed, bested Florida State's Touly 6-3, 6-3 to advance and is now 10-2 this fall and 2-0 over nationally-ranked foes.
Singles round of 32 action Thursday kicks off at 8 a.m., with Chen going against Vanderbilt's No. 30 Christina Rosca while Chi will take on Sara Castellano of Wisconsin.
