DURHAM, N.C. – Duke women's tennis freshman Maria Mateas is set to represent the United States in the annual Master'U BNP Paribas International Collegiate Team Competition, which kicks off Thursday, Nov. 29 and runs through Sunday, Dec. 2 in Grenoble, France.
With her invitation, Mateas becomes just the second Blue Devil woman to be selected for the tournament, as Beatrice Capra earned the honor in 2011.
The tournament will showcase the top American collegians against seven other countries' teams in Belgium, China, France, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland and Italy.
Mateas, who owns the highest professional ranking on the team at No. 303 in the WTA rankings, joins Pepperdine's Ashley Lahey and Jada Hart of UCLA. On the men's side, Oliver Crawford of Florida, USC's Brandon Holt and Emil Reinberg of Georgia round out the squad of six. Team USA will be coached by the Boise State men's coach Greg Patton and the University of California, Berkeley women's coach Amanda Augustus.
The U.S. looks to claim its eighth title in the 13th edition of the annual contest. It will mark Team USA's 11th time vying for the trophy.
During the event, complete results from each day of play can be found by visiting the Master'U BNP Paribas website.
The Chapel Hill, N.C., native has played to a 4-1 ledger thus far in the fall after a tremendous showing at the 2018 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in October, her first collegiate tournament. Mateas, the top-ranked freshman in the country by the ITA, defeated three-consecutive nationally ranked players en route to the championship match, including North Carolina's No. 2 Makenna Jones. Mateas became the first Duke All-American finalist since Daniela Bercek in 2005.
