Mateas Upsets No. 2 Seed En Route to Championship

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Duke women's tennis rookie Maria Mateas continued her strong performance at the 2018 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships Saturday by advancing to the finals of the singles main draw.

Mateas, a product of Chapel Hill, N.C., defeated the second-ranked player in the country, Makenna Jones of North Carolina, (6-1, 6-4) to secure her spot in the championship match. Mateas will take on No. 35 Sophie Whittle Sunday.

Mateas is the first Duke All-American finalist since Daniela Bercek in 2005 and looks to become the first Blue Devil to win the singles event since Kelly McCain in 2002.

Senior Kaitlyn McCarthy and junior Meible Chi cruised to an 8-1 victory over fifth-ranked Emma Davis and Chandler Carter of Wake Forest Saturday in the doubles main backdraw. The duo's run ended in the semifinals by falling to Stanford's third-ranked tandem of Emily Arbuthnott and Michaela Gordon, 8-3.
