INDIA — After cruising to wins in its first two contests of the FIBA U18 Women's Asian Championship, Duke University women's basketball freshman Miela Goodchild and her Australian squad dropped a 63-62 decision Tuesday to Korea to conclude the group phase.
In the contest, Australia trailed 27-18 at the half, but outscored Korea 44-36 in the second half to try to make the comeback. Goodchild assisted on a three-pointer by Pamela Shelley with 1:08 remaining in the game to even the score at 61-61. Australia went ahead 62-61 as Anne Anstey hit one of two free throws, but Korea's Haeran Lee registered the game-winning basket with eight seconds remaining. Australia had a final shot with one second remaining but was missed by Anstey.
Goodchild scored nine points, had three rebounds, three assists and two steals in 37 minutes of action.
Australia will have Wednesday off before taking on New Zealand for the chance to advance to the semifinals on Friday. A win on Thursday by Australia would also qualify the team for the U19 World Championship.
