DURHAM, N.C. – Members of the Duke women's tennis team will make the short trip down Tobacco Road to Chapel Hill, N.C., to begin competition at the ITA Regional Championships, presented by Oracle. The four-day tournament, running from Oct. 18 through Oct. 22, will take place at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on the campus of the University of North Carolina.
“We have generally had a lot of success in the past at Regionals,” head coach Jamie Ashworth said. “It's a great event for us because it helps us establish depth and gives us a feeling of where our girls are against competition we'll see in dual matches later this year. It's a tournament that has provided us with a lot of opportunities with our doubles as well. We're looking to do some great things this weekend and look to build on the success that we had in California and on the success we had in Furman. It's another opportunity to put ourselves in pressure situations and try to also work on different things that we've been working on in practice. Some of our girls have had a good 10-12 days of practice since [All-American] and hopefully we see some improvements in areas we've been working on. It's always been a great event for our program and we hope that trend continues.”
Three Blue Devils will compete this weekend as senior Kaitlyn McCarthy, junior Meible Chi and sophomore Ema Lazic will take the courts this weekend.
Chi has posted the best fall record of any Blue Devil, playing to a 4-1 mark. The Weston, Fla., native recently advanced out of qualifying singles play to the round of 16 in the singles main draw at the 2018 Riviera/ITA All-American Championship. McCarthy (2-2) and Lazic (2-1) will round out the Duke's singles competition.
Chi and McCarthy will also team up for doubles action and own a 2-2 mark so far this fall after advancing to the doubles backdraw semifinal at the All-American Championship.
“I saw them [Chi and McCarthy] improve as All-Americans continued,” Ashworth said. “I thought the match they played against Wake Forest was one of the best matches I've seen them play. They played aggressive, free and communicated really well. Both of them need to have a presence at the net which is something we've talked about and worked on in practice.”
Following the ITA Regional this weekend, Duke will remain on Tobacco Road for the Kitty Harrison Invitational Nov. 2-4 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
“Sometimes it is great to get into a hotel without any distractions and concentrate on what you're doing but hopefully we will be able to take advantage of playing at a place that's comfortable,” Ashworth said. “We can use our facility to warm up for matches if we need to which is a luxury that other programs don't have.”
