DURHAM, N.C. – Duke senior running back Shaun Wilson has been named to the Watch List for the Doak Walker Award, an honor presented annually to the nation's top running back. It is the first selection to the Doak Walker Watch List for Wilson.
The award, which will announce its 28th recipient in 2017, is named for SMU's three-time All-America running back Doak Walker. It is the only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification.
Wilson enters his senior year having played in 36 career games and rushed 313 times for 1,645 yards (5.26) and 12 touchdowns while catching 45 passes for 462 yards (10.11) and two scores. Wilson has lost six fumbles in 401 career touches and been on the field for 1,092 career snaps.
A 5-9, 185-pound product of Charlotte, N.C., Wilson was a preseason All-ACC selection by Phil Steele's College Football Preview (2nd team return specialist) and Athlon Sports (3rd team return specialist & 4th team RB). At the conclusion of spring practice, Wilson received co-Most Improved Offensive Player honors along with wide receiver Aaron Young. Wilson enters his final campaign aiming to become just the fourth player in Duke history to post three or more rushing touchdowns in four seasons, joining Tom Davis (1941-42-43-44), George Clark (1944-45-46-47) and Jela Duncan (2012-13-15-16).
In his career, Wilson has topped the 100-yard plateau on the ground four times, against Kansas (12-245 in 2014), Indiana (9-103 in 2015), Georgia Tech (10-109 in 2016) and North Carolina (24-107 in 2016). He is only active player nationally to register TDs covering 80 or more yards via rush, reception and return.
Last fall Wilson played in all 12 games with eight starting assignments and rushed 151 times for 623 yards (4.13) and four touchdowns. He added eight pass receptions for 76 yards (9.50).
Off the field, Wilson has volunteered for the Duke Campus Cleanup, Durham Rescue Mission, Read with the Blue Devils and Christmas Gift Wrap initiatives.
The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name ten semifinalists on November 15. Three finalists, as voted on by the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee, will be announced November 20. The committee will cast a second vote beginning November 26 to determine the recipient. The National Selection Committee consists of past recipients, former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives.
