DURHAM, N.C. – With the Duke football team in full preparation mode for the Quick Lane Bowl, Duke redshirt junior wide receiver Johnathan Lloyd spoke with GoDuke.com about the upcoming trip to Detroit.
Lloyd ranks second on the team with 37 receptions for 364 yards this season. The Graham, N.C., product has started all 12 games and has scored one touchdown for the Blue Devils.
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite bowl memory?
Johnathan Lloyd: “Definitely winning the New Era Pinstripe Bowl. The first bowl win in so long for Duke. That was huge.”
GoDuke.com: What are you most excited about this trip to Detroit?
JL: “The opportunity to play in a bowl after missing last year. Then, playing in Ford Field, an NFL stadium. That should be cool.”
GoDuke.com: What does it mean to return to a bowl game after not playing in one in 2016?
DJ: “It means a lot. It's big for the whole team. We have an opportunity to get better over winter break and play one more time with some of the guys that will be leaving.”
GoDuke.com: What does it mean to have this time and one more game with this group of seniors?
JL: “It means so much. My roommate, Zavier Carmichael, will be gone after this game. He won't be able to play football next year. It's just time doing what we love together. It means so much to me and my teammates.”
GoDuke.com: What is the most exciting part about playing the Quick Lane Bowl indoors at Ford Field, an NFL stadium?
JL: “No elements. We just get to go play the game. Nothing can dictate it. Not the cold or rain. And it's just another opportunity to play the game.”
GoDuke.com: What does it mean to be spending the holidays on the road with the team?
JL: “First it means we are a winning team. We get the opportunity to be on the road over Christmas. And then spending time with people you love, which is always a good thing.”
GoDuke.com: What is the feeling around campus right before break starts?
JL: “Focusing on football; that's the best part. We just go play wherever. There are no other distractions. And you get better parking in the Blue Zone.”
GoDuke.com: What have you been filling the time between the last regular season game and the bowl game with?
JL: “I got to go grocery shopping and cook a bit, which I don't get to do very often. Best thing I made were pancakes. I love breakfast food. Just relax, watching TV and movies. No school work, just football. You practice and then you go home and relax."
