TEMPE, Ariz. – One week before the beginning of the 2017 spring campaign, the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll has been released with Duke having one singles representative and one doubles team in the rankings.
Junior Nicolas Alvarez checks in at No. 10. A native of Lima, Peru, Alvarez became Duke's 21st All-American in 2015 and has been a First Team All-ACC honoree both years with Duke. Alvarez ended his fall season with a trophy, capturing the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship consolation championship, winning his final four matches of the fall. The No. 14 player in the Oracle/ITA preseason ledger, Alvarez compiled a 9-4 fall singles mark with a 3-4 record versus ranked opponents.
Alvarez and freshman Nick Stachowiak are ranked in doubles, beginning the year at No. 33. The pair went 4-1 together in the fall, playing at the ITA Carolina Regional and advancing to the semifinals before falling to the No. 3 team of Wake Forest's Skander Mansouri and Christian Seraphim.
As a team, the Blue Devils were just outside the poll at No. 26, leading the group of others receiving votes.
The ITA also released its first regional list of the year. Alvarez was tabbed the No. 3 player in the Carolina Regional while a talented trio of Blue Devil freshmen rounded out the list with No. 18 Spencer Furman, No. 19 Stachowiak and No. 20 Robert Levine. Furman ended his fall with the A1 singles title in Charlotte, winning all four of his singles matches in straight sets. He completed the fall with a 4-0 singles mark. Stachowiak played to the best record of any member on the team during the fall, going 11-4 in singles while Levine was right behind at 11-5. Levine began the fall at No. 9 in the Oracle/ITA National Freshmen/Newcomer rankings and ended the fall with the singles championship at the Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic.
In doubles, Alvarez and Stachowiak were the No. 2 pair in the Carolina Regional while sophomores Jason Lapidus and Vincent Lin were No. 6. Lapidus and Lin also played together at the Carolina Regional and went 4-1 with a trip to the semifinals.
The Blue Devils open the spring campaign Monday, January 9 at Hawai'i for an 8 p.m. ET match. Duke will also face Ole Miss (Tuesday, 2 p.m. ET) and LSU (Wednesday, 2 p.m. ET) while in Hawai'i.
