REUNION, Fla. – Following a slow start in the opening round of the 2016-17 campaign, Duke University junior
Leona Maguire turned in a combined 11-under-par over the next two days to finish tied third overall at the Annika Intercollegiate.
Maguire registered a 65 in the second round and then finished with a 68 Tuesday in the final round on her way to finishing at nine-under-par, 207, at the Watson Course in Reunion, Fla. She finished just two shots off the individual leader, Maria Fassi of Arkansas (205). Maguire's score of 27 was tied for the seventh lowest 54-hole ledger in school history.
“She's striking the ball really well,” said Duke head coach
Dan Brooks. “She said she struck the ball the first day as well as she did the whole tournament, it's just the putts fell later and they didn't fall in the first day. That's the whole deal with her. Once they started dropping, if she could make putts that first day like she did later in the tournament, it would have been really, really special.”
A native of Cavan, Ireland, Maguire got off to a hot start Tuesday as she birdied No. 11, No. 12 and No. 14 on her way to moving to three-under for the day. She suffered bogeys on No. 15 and No. 18 to drop back to one-under, but kicked off her final nine holes with her fifth career collegiate eagle.
She then collected birdies on the third and fourth holes to reach five-under for the day. Maguire closed Tuesday with a bogey on her 18th hole to finish with a 68. She hit 14 fairways, 15 greens and totaled 29 putts on the day.
As a team, the fifth-ranked Blue Devils moved up the leaderboard for the second straight day and concluded the 54-hole event in seventh place.
“I am proud of our first performance of the season,” said Brooks. “It's a long process that just got started. All is good.”
Southern California took home the team title with a 24-under-par, 840, while Arkansas (842), UCLA (844), Georgia (845), Florida (848), South Carolina (849), Duke (857) and UCF (859) rounded out the top eight teams. After an opening round of 293, the Blue Devils were a combined eight-under-par over the final two days of play with rounds of 278 and 286.
After turning in a six-under-par score over the first 36 holes, sophomore
Virginia Elena Carta struggled in the final round to get putts to drop and finished with a one-over-par, 73. She closed tied 14th overall with a five-under-par, 211, for her ninth career top 20 placement in just two years at Duke.
Carta, who hails from Udine, Italy, was held without a birdie on the final day, after totaling seven over the first two days. The lone bogey came on the 406-yard, par four fifth hole. Carta hit 16 greens, 12 fairways and rolled 36 putts.
Senior
Sandy Choi signed for rounds of 75, 71 and 73 for a three-over-par, 219, and finished tied 36th overall. Choi, who is from Seoul, South Korea, opened her day with a bogey on No. 10, but then collected 11 straight pars. She added a bogey on No. 4 and then sank her lone birdie of the day on the 188-yard, par three seventh hole. Choi finished the day with a 73, while hitting 14 fairways, 15 greens and totaling 33 putts.

Gurbani Singh notched a tied for team-best five birdies in the final round on her way to totaling a 72. A product Seoul, South Korea, Singh opened the day with a bogey, birdie and bogey. She then totaled birdies on No. 14, No. 16, No. 2 and No. 3 to get to three-under-par. Singh then suffered bogeys on three straight holes to drop back to even par, which is where she finished for the day. For the tournament, she placed tied for 47th with a 222.
With a final round of 76, junior
Lisa Maguire placed tied for 55th overall. Maguire, who is from Cavan, Ireland, was two-over-par on both the front and back nine on her way to finishing with a 76. She notched one birdie in the round, which came on the 382-yard, par four ninth hole.
