BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. – Duke rising sophomore Alex Smalley's run at the 2016 U.S. Amateur came to an end on Thursday in the match play round of 32, as he fell to Dylan Meyer of Evansville, Ind., by a 4&3 score.
Smalley claimed the individual medal at Oakland Hills Country Club on Tuesday with a two-round total of 133 (-7), the second-lowest stroke play score in the history of the U.S. Amateur.
The Wake Forest, N.C., native played solid golf on Thursday but ran into a hot opponent, as Meyer took an initial lead with an eagle on No. 2 and Smalley was unable to catch him from there.
Including Smalley, Duke returns all nine letterwinners from last season and will look to get the 2016-17 campaign off to a good start when it hosts the Rod Myers Invitational from Sept. 10-11.
