SAO PAULO, Brazil — Behind a 1-0 victory over France in the Olympic quarterfinals, Duke University senior
Rebecca Quinn and the Canada Women's National Team advanced to the semifinals where it will face Germany Tuesday, Aug. 16.
Quinn, who hails from Toronto, Canada, came in the second half and played nine minutes on defense. She has now seen action in all four matches during Olympic play for Canada.
Canada and Germany will play for the second time in a week as Canada totaled a 2-1 victory in group play. Germany defeated China PR, 1-0, Friday to also advance.
In the 56th minute, Canada netted the all-important goal as Shelina Zadorsky delivered her pass down field for Janine Beckie. Beckie took a touch both outside and inside the box to outplay Sakina Karchaoui, before crossing a pass to the back post for Sophie Schmidt, who slotted it into the net.
From there, Canada stood strong until the final whistle to hold the 1-0 victory and advance to a rematch with Germany. In the group phase, Canada defeated both the Asian champions Australia and the European champions Germany to finish first in their group.
This marks Canada's third consecutive participation at the Women's Olympic Football Tournament. Four years ago at London 2012, Canada won a historic bronze medal, the nation's first in a summer team sport since 1936. With its second win at Rio 2016, Canada's all-time record improved to six wins, two draws, and four losses in 12 matches.
