DURHAM, N.C.— Duke University sophomore
Virginia Elena Carta is set to compete in the LPGA Marathon Classic in Sylvania, Ohio, from July 14-17 at the Highland Meadows Golf Club. Carta received the exemption into the event, after claiming the NCAA Individual Championship in May.
A product of Udine, Italy, Carta will tee it up with five other former Duke golfers as Jean Bartholomew, Laetitia Beck, Lindy Duncan, Candy Hannemann and Brittany Lang will also compete this week. Lang is coming off claiming the U.S. Women's Open Championship Sunday in California. Carta will be seeing action in the first LPGA event of her career.
The event will be contested on the 6,512-yard, par 72 Highland Meadows Golf Club, where Chella Choi is the defending champion. Choi defeated Ha Na Jang in a one-hole playoff a year ago.
Recently named the winner of the Honda Sports Award for Golf, Carta is coming off claiming the NCAA Individual Championship in record fashion with a 16-under-par, 272, on her way to winning by a NCAA-record eight strokes in May. Her 16-under-par and 72-hole total of 272 were both NCAA records as well.
As a freshman, Carta totaled a 72.41 stroke average, which is the fifth-best in school history by a rookie. Carta registered 13 rounds of even or under par to rank tied seventh on the Duke freshman record charts. She finished the season ranked ninth in the Golfweek listing.
Fans can follow the Marathon Classic via the Golf Channel July 14-15 from 8-10 p.m., and July 16 from 6-8 p.m. The final round will be aired live on CBS July 17 from 4-6 p.m.
