DURHAM, N.C. – In a change of plans, Duke junior
Leona Maguire decided not to compete in the Tipsport Golf Masters tournament on the Ladies European Tour and instead play in the Ladies British Open Amateur along with her sister,
Lisa Maguire, June 21-25 at Dundonald Links in the United Kingdom.
Leona Maguire, who hails from Cavan, Ireland, is coming off helping lead Great Britain & Ireland (GB&I) to an 11 ½ to 8 ½ victory over the United States. Leona &
Lisa Maguire will look to become the second straight Blue Devil to win the event as recent graduate
Celine Boutier won the Ladies British Open Amateur last summer.
The event will feature 36 holes of stroke play qualifying and the 64 lowest scores over 36 holes will qualify for match play action.
Leona Maguire, a two-time first team All-America, is coming off totaling a 72.29 stroke average to go along with two top five, six top 10 and eight top 20 finishes on the season. She registered her fourth collegiate victory at the Tar Heel Invitational with rounds of 69, 72 and 71 for a 213. Maguire led the Blue Devils with 17 rounds of even or under par and added three rounds in the 60s on the year. Maguire concluded the season ranked fourth in the Golfweek individual ledger.
Lisa Maguire is coming off winning the Ulster Women's Open Championship in late May at the
Royal Belfast Golf Club in Ireland. A native of Cavan, Ireland, Maguire registered four match play wins after finishing second in stroke play qualifying with rounds of 76 and 77. In the championship, Maguire downed Aedin Murphy, who won her home club's Scratch Cup earlier in the season and was third in stroke play qualifying.
