GREENSBORO, N.C. – Duke rising junior Nicolas Alvarez earned a place on the 2016 All-ACC Academic Men's Tennis Team, as announced Thursday by league commissioner John Swofford. It was the second straight year Alvarez was named to the league's academic squad.
Alvarez was one of just three sophomores to be placed on the team, joining Wake Forest's Skander Mansouri and Virginia's Hernik Wiersholm. A political science major, Alvarez owns a cumulative 3.712 GPA.
On the court in 2015-16, Alvarez was a First Team All-ACC honoree for the second straight season. He ended the year ranked No. 28 by the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association. He was named the squad's most valuable player and earned his second straight NCAA Singles Championship selection. The Lima, Peru, product finished the year with a 17-15 overall record, 13-10 slate in dual matches and 10-13 mark against nationally ranked foes. He served as Duke's No. 1 singles player for the entire season and ended the year on a strong note, winning six of his final eight matches.
The league had 10 schools represented on the 2016 All-ACC Academic Team, led by Virginia with five honorees. The Cavaliers' junior Thai-Son Kwiatkowski was named the 2016 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.00 grade point average for their careers as well as a 3.00 for each of the last two semesters.
To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic Team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average.
