DURHAM, N.C. – Duke head football coach David Cutcliffe handed out his yearly spring football awards on Saturday, highlighting five Blue Devils for their outstanding performances during spring period.
On offense, redshirt junior center Austin Davis and redshirt freshman wide receiver Keyston Fuller shared most improved player accolades. Last fall, Davis appeared in six games and was on the field for 66 snaps while backing up All-America center Matt Skura. Fuller redshirted during his true rookie year.
Defensively, redshirt freshman safety Jordan Hayes and redshirt sophomore linebacker Tinashe Bere received co-most improved player accolades. Hayes redshirted during the 2015 season. Bere played in 11 games, including six starts, and earned Campus Insiders honorable mention Freshman All-America recognition. He booked 58 tackles, 4.5 tackles for lost yardage, 1.5 sacks, two quarterback pressures and one caused fumble.
Wrapping up the honorees was senior center Jake Brodner, who received the Blue Devil Heart Award.
The Blue Devils return 44 lettermen and 13 starters from last year's 8-5 squad that captured the New Era Pinstripe Bowl championship with a 44-41 overtime victory against Indiana. Duke began spring drills on March 5 and will conclude their stretch of 15 practice dates on Wednesday, April 13.
Duke opens the 2016 season Saturday, September 3 by hosting N.C. Central.
