DURHAM, N.C. – Six Duke football players were selected for membership in the National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame's Hampshire Honor Society. Representing Duke were
Kelby Brown,
Kyler Brown,
Ross Martin,
Max McCaffrey,
David Reeves and
Cody Robinson.
Duke's six selections led all Power 5 conference schools and ranked tied for second overall nationally, trailing only Akron (7). Duke has now placed at least four players on the NFF Hampshire Honor Society in four of the last five seasons.
The six Hampshire Honor Society citations come at the conclusion of an outstanding three-year stretch for Duke as the Blue Devils captured a program-record 27 victories, qualified for three straight bowl games, claimed the 2015 New Era Pinstripe Bowl championship with a 44-41 overtime victory against Indiana in December and captured the 2013 ACC Coastal Division.
The NFF Hampshire Honor Society is comprised of college football players from all divisions of play who maintained a cumulative 3.2 grade point average or better throughout their college careers. A total of 868 players from 275 schools qualified for membership in the society's 10th year.
"The number of colleges and universities who embrace the Hampshire Honor Society continues to increase each year," said NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell. "Over the past decade, it has become a powerful vehicle for schools to recognize their college football players who have distinguished themselves both academically and athletically, and we congratulate the schools and each of these young men for their commitment to excellence."
Kelby Brown earned four varsity letters, the first three as a linebacker and the last as a student assistant after suffering a career ending knee injury and shifting to a coaching role for the final year of his career, in 2015. He was granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA on November 10, 2014, but sustained a career ending injury during the summer of 2015. Brown played in 32 games with 29 starts, booking 242 total tackles, 23.5 tackles for loss, 4.0 sacks, two interceptions, 15 quarterback pressures, four fumble recoveries, three caused fumbles and five pass breakups. Off the field, the evolutionary anthropology major was named to the 2015 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, Duke's fourth consecutive representative on the squad. Brown was a two-time Academic All-ACC honoree and a Capital One Academic All-District III pick in 2013.
Kyler Brown, a four-year letterwinner as both a linebacker and defensive end, played in 47 career games with 10 starts. He completed his career with 135 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks, five pass breakups, two caused fumbles and one blocked kick. He totaled 24 career games with three or more tackles, including a personal-high 14 stops against Georgia Tech in 2012. The computer science and visual arts double major was an Academic All-ACC selection in 2012 and 2013.
Martin, a senior kicker, was a three time Sports Illustrated All-America selection (2013, 2014 and 2015), a four-time All-ACC honoree and a four-time Academic All-ACC pick. A psychology major, Martin was a 2015 CoSIDA Academic All-America second team member. Martin, one of two Blue Devils to be a four-time All-ACC selection, finished his 53-game career making 78-of-93 field goals and 196-of-197 extra points. His 430 total points rank second in ACC history as he holds Duke career records for total points, field goals, field goals attempted, field goal percentage (.839), field goals of 50-plus yards (eight), PAT conversions, PAT attempts and consecutive PAT conversions (152).
McCaffrey, a senior wide receiver and psychology major, received a pair of Academic All-ACC honors. He departs Duke as a four-year letterwinner who played in 53 games with 38 starts, totaling 117 receptions for 1,341 yards and 12 touchdowns. As a senior, McCaffrey started all 13 games and hauled in 52 passes for 643 yards and five scores, all of which led the Blue Devils. During the 2015 campaign, he became the 18th player in Duke history to reach the 100-catch plateau and 35th to amass 1,000 or more receiving yards.
Reeves, a redshirt senior, picked up four letters as a tight end with the Blue Devils. He played in 53 career games with 35 starts and ended his career with 47 receptions for 3667 yards and seven touchdowns. Reeves is the only player in Duke history with touchdown receptions in multiple bowl games (2012 Belk and 2013 Chick-fil-A). A sociology major, he is also a two-time Academic All-ACC selection.
Robinson, a redshirt senior offensive lineman, helped Duke to 33 wins, the 2013 ACC Coastal Division championship and four bowl game trips during his career. He appeared in 34 games as a Blue Devil before his playing career was halted by a back injury suffered in 2015. Robinson experienced action in one game as a senior while serving as a student assistant coach for the remainder of the campaign. As a member of the offensive line, he helped Duke to consecutive seasons of 20 or more rushing and passing touchdowns in 2013 and 2014 and was part of an offensive unit that reached 5,000 yards of total offense in four straight seasons, a first in program history.
