BOSTON – The No. 69 Duke men's tennis team halted a two-match losing streak Sunday with a 5-2 victory at Boston College. It was the Blue Devils' fourth consecutive match with a 5-2 final, with Duke splitting the four matches. The Blue Devils improve to 8-9 overall and 2-3 in the ACC with the Sunday victory.
Duke halted a five-match string of doubles point losses by capturing two of the three matches on Sunday. The Blue Devils secured their initial win on court three, where senior Josh Levine and freshman Ryan Dickerson downed Kent Mukai and Jeffrey Melvin, 6-3. Levine and Dickerson evened their overall record at 5-5 and upped their ACC mark to 2-1.
Finishing simultaneously were courts one and two, with Duke winning at No. 1, where freshmen Vincent Lin and Catalin Mateas defeated Kyle Childree and Hank Workman, 6-4. Lin and Mateas, playing for the first time on the top court, improve to 6-3 overall, 5-1 in dual matches and 1-1 in ACC action.
The Eagles (3-10, 0-5 ACC) claimed a victory on court two with a 6-4 win by Alexandre Thirouin and Aidan McNutty against senior Daniel McCall and freshman Jason Lapidus. The Duke duo falls to 4-5 overall and 0-4 in ACC action.
With just four indoor courts at the Boston College facility, the teams played the singles matches on courts one through four first, with Duke winning three of the four to clinch the overall match. The teams split the matches on courts five and six in the second segment.
On court two, Lin gave Duke a 2-0 lead with a convincing 6-2, 6-1 triumph versus Melvin. Lin leads Duke with 18 overall wins at 18-13 and is now 3-2 in league play. The victory was Lin's first on court two this year.
A 6-3, 6-2 victory by Levine against Thirouin on court four gave the Blue Devils a commanding 3-0 advantage. Levine improved to 12-10 overall and 2-1 versus ACC competition.
Mateas made the first appearance of his career on court one, clinching the match and topping McNutty, 6-3, 6-4. Mateas lifted his overall record to 11-6 in dual matches and 2-3 against ACC foes. The victory was also the rookie's first match-deciding win of his career.
Boston College tallied its first point on court three, where Workman slipped past junior TJ Pura, 6-4, 7-6. Pura's five-match winning streak was snapped as he slipped to 11-10 overall and 4-1 in ACC action.
Duke tucked away its fifth, and last, point on court six, where Dickerson blew past Childree, 6-3, 6-1. Dickerson tallied his 10th victory of the campaign and is 10-8 overall and 2-2 in the ACC.
The Eagles secured their final point on court five as Mukai downed freshman Adrian Chamdani, 6-4, 6-1. Chamdani fell to 11-11 overall and 0-2 versus league foes.
The Blue Devils return home next weekend for three matches. Duke hosts Virginia Tech at 3 p.m. Friday before welcoming Louisville and N.C. Central for a doubleheader Sunday, beginning at 12 noon.
