ATLANTA – Blue Devil swimmers returned to the pool Saturday for the final day of competition at the 2016 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, hosted by Georgia Tech at the Yellow Jackets' McAuley Aquatic Center.
A day after competing in the 100-yard butterfly preliminaries, sophomore Leah Goldman and junior Maddie Rusch returned to the water for the 100 freestyle. Goldman touched in a season-best time of 49.58 to place 49th in the field while Rusch was 51st in 49.66.
During the course of the meet, Goldman also took to the water individually in the 200 IM and Rusch in the 50 freestyle.
In the 200 butterfly, sophomore Isabella Paez earned a top-25 finish in preliminaries with a mark of 1:56.75. Paez also joined Goldman and Rusch in Friday's 100 butterfly preliminaries.
Duke was also represented Saturday by distance swimmer Verity Abel, who covered the mile in 16:24.30 to place 38th in the field. The Westport, Conn., native turned in a 1,000 split of 9:56.13 after also competing in the 200 and 500 freestyle events at NCAAs.
The Blue Devils competed in their second relay event of the meet, as freshman Maddie Hess, Rusch, senior Chelsea Ye and Goldman teamed up to take 21st in the 400 freestyle relay. The quartet clocked 3:17.26, with Hess leading off in 49.27.
The Duke women were represented at the NCAA Championships for the fourth consecutive season and ninth time overall.
The men's team will take its turn at NCAAs Wednesday through Saturday at McAuley Aquatic Center. Junior swimmers Peter Kropp and James Peek will compete as individuals, as will freshman diver Evan Moretti, while junior Kaz Takabayashi, Kropp, senior David Armstrong and Peek will represent the Blue Devils in the 200 and 400 medley relays. Juniors Michael Miller and Mike Seaberg will travel with the group as relay alternates.
Action at the 2016 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships will be broadcast on NCAA.com and ESPN3.
