ST. LOUIS – Duke guard/forward Brandon Ingram continued to add to his postseason haul on Wednesday when he was one of five first-year stars named to the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) Freshman All-America Team.
Ingram, who was named Wayman Tisdale National Freshman of the Week for Jan. 4-10, is the third USBWA Freshman All-American in Duke history, alongside Jabari Parker (2014) and Jahlil Okafor (2015). The USBWA instituted its Freshman All-America Team in 2013.
A second-team All-ACC selection and the 2016 ACC Freshman of the Year, Ingram is averaging 16.8 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in 34.2 minutes per game this season. He is shooting 44.1 percent from the floor and 41.3 percent from three-point territory.
The Kinston, N.C., native is on pace to become the fourth freshman to average at least 15.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game under Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski, alongside Luol Deng (2004), Okafor (2015) and Parker (2014).
His average of 16.8 points per game this season is the third-highest among major-conference freshmen, trailing only Jamal Murray of Kentucky (20.1), Ben Simmons of LSU (19.2) and Henry Ellenson of Marquette (17.0). He leads ACC freshmen in scoring (16.8), rebounds (6.8), three-point field goal percentage (.413) and double-doubles (8), while also ranking second among conference freshmen in blocks (1.4).
Ingram's eight double-doubles on the season are the fifth-most by a freshman in Duke history, and his 11 20-point games are tied for the third-most ever by a Duke rookie. He has three 20/10 games this season, and is the lone ACC freshman to record one.
One of the nation's most versatile players, Ingram is the first freshman and only the second player – along with Shane Battier – in Duke history to make at least 60 three-pointers (74) and block at least 40 shots (46) in the same season. His 74 three-pointers on the season are the second-most by a freshman in Duke history.
In addition to his ACC postseason honors, Ingram has also been named one of five finalists for the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award. He was named to the USBWA All-District III team earlier this month along with teammate Grayson Allen, and was one of five finalists for the USBWA's Wayman Tisdale Award, given annually to the National Freshman of the Year.
