ATLANTA, Ga. – Duke University sophomore
Azurá Stevens has been named one of 30 student-athletes to the 2015-16 “Wade Watch” list, which was released by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Friday.
The Wade Trophy is presented to the nation's most outstanding NCAA® Division I women's basketball player each year – one who not only excels athletically, but also serves as a positive role model both on and off the court. The acclaimed Wade Watch list, from which the Wade Trophy recipient is chosen, consists of players selected on the basis of game and season statistics, leadership, character, overall playing ability and the positive impact on her respective team.
Stevens, who hails from Raleigh, N.C., has averaged 18.9 points, 9.6 rebounds, 2.1 blocks, 1.6 assists and 1.3 steals on the season. Her 18.9 points ranks second in the ACC, while her 9.6 boards leads the league. Even though she missed seven games with a foot injury, she still leads the ACC with 14 double-doubles.
The WBCA will officially announce The Wade Trophy winner during the WBCA National Convention, held in conjunction with the NCAA® Women's Final Four® in Indianapolis.
Other student-athletes on the Wade Watch list include Jillian Alleyne (Oregon), Ameryst Alston (OSU), Rachel Banham (Minnesota), Imani Boyette (Texas), Adut Bulgak (FSU), Jordin Canada (UCLA), Alaina Coates (South Carolina), Nia Coffey (Northwestern), Nina Davis (Baylor), Diamond DeShields (Tennessee), Makayla Epps (Kentucky), Moriah Jefferson (UConn), Niya Johnson (Baylor), Brionna Jones (Maryland), Jonquel Jones (George Washington), Brittney Martin (Oklahoma State), Kelsey Mitchell (OSU), Tiffany Mitchell (South Carolina), Adrienne Motley (Miami), Kelsey Plum (Washington), Aerial Powers (Michigan State), Breanna Stewart (UConn), Morgan Tuck (UConn), Brianna Turner (Notre Dame), Victoria Vivians (MSU), Courtney Walker (Texas A&M), Shatori Walker-Kimbrough (Maryland), Courtney Williams (South Florida) and A'ja Wilson (South Carolina).
After missing seven games, Stevens returned to the ACC Tournament and in two contests she led the field with a 12.5 rebounds average, while compiling averages of 16.5 points, 1.0 blocks and 1.0 steals. The 6-6 matchup nightmare was named to the All-ACC Tournament second team.
The Wade Trophy, named after the late, legendary head coach Lilly Margaret Wade, a three-time national champion at Delta State University, debuted in 1978 as the first-ever women's national player of the year award in college basketball.
In ACC games only, Stevens totaled an ACC-best 20.4 points and 10.1 rebounds in nine contests. She registered five double-doubles in the nine league games. Stevens is also a Naismith, USBWA and John R. Wooden Award candidate for National Player of the Year.
The Blue Devils have registered one winner of the Wade Trophy, Alana Beard, in 2003-04.
Duke (20-12, 8-8 ACC) advanced to the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament before falling to top-seeded Notre Dame. The Blue Devils await the NCAA Tournament selection show Monday, March 14 at 7 p.m., on ESPN.
