BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Duke women's basketball team overcame a first-half deficit to edge Virginia Tech in exciting fashion Thursday, defeating the Hokies by a 66-62 score at Cassell Coliseum. With the win, the Blue Devils improved to 18-10 overall and evened their ACC ledger at 7-7.
Junior Oderah Chidom and redshirt sophomore Rebecca Greenwell led the way with 16 and 15 points, respectively, while Chidom picked up her second double-double of the season with a game-high 11 rebounds. Freshman Angela Salvadores also chipped in 10 points and added four assists.
The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair until Duke received consecutive baskets from freshmen Crystal Primm and Salvadores that gave the visiting squad a 16-11 advantage. Chidom also provided an offensive spark in the opening minutes, recording six points to go along with four rebounds.
The Hokies outscored Duke 20-11 in the second frame behind a scoring burst, and took a 31-27 lead at the intermission. Taijah Campbell and Vanessa Panousis had eight points each for Virginia Tech in the first 20 minutes, while Chidom paced the Blue Devils with 10 points.
After trailing at the half for the fourth consecutive game, Duke responded by stringing together a series of three-pointers. Graduate student Amber Henson sank two and Salvadores registered one as the Blue Devils trimmed the deficit to three midway through the third quarter.
Duke closed the third period on a 10-0 run as Greenwell scored the Blue Devils' final seven points of the period and led 49-46.
After leading the entire fourth period, Duke went down 62-61 with 1:54 remaining as the Hokies got a basket from Sidney Cook. The Blue Devils responded with a jumper by freshman Kyra Lambert, which were her first points of the game, to put Duke ahead 63-62 with 1:03 left.
The Duke defense was solid over the final minute holding the Hokies scoreless, while Chidom hit a free throw and Greenwell added two free throws.
For the game, Duke hit 50.0 percent from the field and outrebounded the Hokies, 40-24. The win concluded a three-game losing streak for the Blue Devils.
Up next, Duke returns home to host Georgia Tech Sunday on Senior Day in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The 2 p.m. contest will be broadcast on Blue Devil Network Plus.
