DURHAM, N.C.— For only the third time in school history, a Duke women's soccer student-athlete has received National Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA) First Team All-America accolades as senior
Christina Gibbons was honored with the distinction as the NCAA College Cup kicked off Friday in San Jose, Calif.
Gibbons, who hails from Raleigh, N.C., joins Kelly Walbert and Natasha Anasi as the only First Team NSCAA All-America selections in Blue Devil history. Anasi received the honor in 2011, while Walbert was named in 1993 and 1994. Gibbons, Anasi and Walbert are also the only three Duke standouts to be named to the first team as well.
"It is such an honor to be recognized as an All-America,” said Gibbons. “I feel as though I owe a tremendous amount to my teammates, my coaches, my family, and Duke Athletics for setting me up for success throughout my career. I could not have done it without them."
A two-time captain with the Blue Devils, Gibbons has developed into one of the top female collegiate soccer players in the country. She totaled four goals and a team-high eight assists as a senior, while leading Duke to a 15-5-3 overall and 7-2-1 league mark. Duke advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship, before falling, 1-0, to top-seeded West Virginia.
Gibbons is one of 15 semifinalists for the MAC Hermann Trophy honoring the top player in the nation and was the 2016 ACC Defensive Player of the Year, after helping the Blue Devils to 11 shutouts on the defensive end. She was recently named the winner of the Senior CLASS Award, was a First Team All-ACC selection, NSCAA All-Region First Team and CoSIDA Academic All-America honoree.
As a junior, Gibbons helped the Blue Devils to a NCAA College Cup appearance, earning All-Tournament Team honors and was named a Second-Team NSCAA All-America. Over her career, she started 86-of-87 games played and totaled 10 goals, 19 assists and 39 points. Her seven career penalty kick goals were a school record. Gibbons finished her career with 7,794 minutes played, which was the third most in Blue Devil history and the second most by a field player.
