DURHAM, N.C. - As Duke Athletics nears the conclusion of 2016, we wanted to look back at some of the top moments that made it so extraordinary.
In this countdown titled, “Top 16 of 2016,” we have chosen 16 noteworthy events from the calendar year that encapsulated the spirit and success of Duke while also illuminating the growth and achievements that our athletic programs continue to attain.
The series, starting Friday, December 16, will continue daily until its conclusion on December 31.
No. 11: Christina Gibbons Outstanding Senior Season
Following an outstanding four-year career on the pitch with the Blue Devils, senior Christina Gibbons received NSCAA First Team All-America, NSCAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year, CoSIDA Academic All-America and was selected the winner of the Senior CLASS Award. Gibbons, a native of Raleigh, N.C., developed into one of the top female collegiate soccer players in the country. She totaled four goals and a team-high eight assists as a senior, while leading Duke to a 15-5-3 overall and 7-2-1 league mark. Duke advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship, before falling, 1-0, to top-seeded West Virginia. Over her career, she started 86-of-87 games played and totaled 10 goals, 19 assists and 39 points. Her seven career penalty kick goals were a school record. Gibbons finished her career with 7,794 minutes played, which was the third most in Blue Devil history and the second most by a field player. A visual media studies major, she owns a 3.90 grade-point average, has been on the Dean's List at Duke in five of her six semesters.
