DURHAM, N.C.— Three Duke women's soccer standouts –
Christina Gibbons,
Toni Payne and
Ella Stevens – have been named to the National Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA) All-Southeast Region team, which was announced this week.
Gibbons was selected to the first team, while both Payne and Stevens earned third team accolades.
A product of Raleigh, N.C., Gibbons received All-Southeast Region first team accolades for the second straight year, after turning in an outstanding final season with the Blue Devils. Gibbons totaled four goals and a team-high eight assists playing at both the midfield and defensive slots. The 2016 ACC Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All-ACC selection, Gibbons helped the Blue Devils post 11 shutouts on the defensive end. She is also a semifinalist for the 2016 Hermann Trophy.
Payne collected nine goals and six assists for a career-best 24 points as a senior. A 5-4 forward from Birmingham, Ala., Payne registered three goals and two assists in the NCAA Tournament as Duke's run ended in the NCAA Elite Eight. She concluded her Blue Devil career with 23 goals, 21 assists and 67 points. Her 21 assists ranked tied seventh, while her 206 shots were eighth on Duke's all-time career charts.
One of the top freshmen in the nation, Stevens made an immediate impact on the Blue Devils in 2016. A native of Grayson, Ga., Stevens tallied a team-best 10 goals and 26 points, which ranked tied second and fourth, respectively, on the Duke freshman record books. She added six assists along with a team-best five game-winning goals. The 5-9 midfielder was a 2016 Third Team All-ACC and All-Freshman Team selection.
As a team, the Blue Devils registered a 15-5-3 overall and 7-2-1 record in the ACC, before falling in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship to West Virginia, 1-0.
