
More Wins for the Blue Devils on Saturday

DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke men's tennis team received strong Saturday performances from junior Nicolas Alvarez and freshman Robert Levine at a pair of tournaments. Alvarez won two matches at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship to advance to the consolation championship match while Levine moved to the finals of the Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic in Florida.
Alvarez, in Flushing, N.Y., for the national indoor event, won his consolation quarterfinal match 6-2, 6-2 against Texas' Yuya Ito. Alvarez, ranked No. 14 in the preseason Oracle/ITA poll, took on No. 44 Strong Kirchheimer of Northwestern in the semifinals and breezed through with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph. Alvarez will play No. 6 Tom Fawcett of Stanford in the 10 a.m. Sunday championship.
In Florida, Levine and sophomore Catalin Mateas dropped an 8-4 decision to UCF's Harrison Richmond and Mariano Porter.
In singles quarterfinal action, the draw's top seed Levine advanced to the semifinals with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory against Maxx Lipman of Florida. Levine then dropped George Washington's Julius Tverijonas, the No. 4 seed in the draw, 6-2, 6-1, to advance to Sunday's finals. Levine will take on No. 2 seed Alexandru Gozun of USF in the title match.
Two other Blue Devils fell in quarterfinal matches with Mateas, the No. 3 seed in the draw, losing to Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff of Louisville, 6-3, 6-3. Senior TJ Pura was downed by Gozun, 7-5, 6-4.
