DURHAM, N.C. – The ACC Office released its annual awards Thursday with Duke University women's soccer senior Christina Gibbons earning Defensive Player of the Year, while three other Blue Devils received All-ACC accolades.
Senior Toni Payne was also named to the All-ACC First Team, junior Imani Dorsey to the All-ACC Second Team and freshman Ella Stevens to the All-ACC Third Team. Stevens also collected All-ACC Freshman team honors.
Gibbons became the third Blue Devil in school history to receive ACC Defensive Player of the Year recognition (Natasha Anasi in 2011, Carolyn Ford in 2005), while earning All-ACC First Team accolades for the third straight season. A product of Raleigh, N.C., Gibbons is just the fourth Duke player to receive First Team All-ACC honors in three different seasons – Casey McCluskey (2001-03), Thora Helgadottir (2001-03) and Kelly Walbert (1993-95).
One of the best all-around student-athletes in the nation, Gibbons is a steady defender and dynamic offensive threat for the Blue Devils. She has helped lead the Duke defense to nine shutouts on the season, while also totaling at least one point in six out of the final nine regular season matches. A native of Raleigh, N.C., Gibbons owns four goals and a team-high eight assists on the year. Her eight dishes currently rank tied second in the ACC.
After earning All-ACC Second Team accolades as a junior, Payne was voted to the All-ACC First Team in 2016. Payne owns six goals and four assists for 16 points during her senior campaign through 19 matches. A product of Birmingham, Ala., Payne has registered two game-winning goals and scored three of her six goals in ACC action.
Earning All-ACC honors for the first time in her career was Dorsey, a forward from Elkridge, Md. With seven goals and five assists, Dorsey has established herself as one of the most dangerous players in the nation in 2016. She owns three game-winning goals and ranks in the top 10 in the ACC in points and goals scored.
Since arriving in Durham this past August, Stevens has made an immediate impact on the Duke program with a team-high eight goals to go along with four assists. Stevens, who is from Grayson, Ga., became the first Blue Devil freshman since Cassie Pecht in 2012 to be named to both the All-ACC Freshman and All-ACC team. The midfielder/forward registered five of her eight goals on the year against league opponents.
Duke will await the NCAA Tournament selection show Monday, Nov. 7 at 4:30 p.m., for its next opponent in the postseason.
