FLUSHING, N.Y. – A trio of Blue Devils opened play at the 2016 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing, N.Y., Thursday, with a singles player reaching the round of 16 in the singles draw and a Duke doubles tandem playing into the round of 16 in the doubles bracket.
Freshman Meible Chi picked up her 13th singles win of the season and advanced to the round of 16 after defeating Michigan's Alex Najarian in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. With the score tied at 4-4 in the opening set, Chi won back-to-back games, gaining a one-set advantage. The two competitors once again stood tied at 4-4 in the second set, before Chi claimed the final two games to win the set and the match. With the victory, Chi reached the round of 16 where she will face second-ranked Luisa Stefani of Pepperdine Friday at 9 a.m.
The tandem of junior Samantha Harris and sophomore Ellyse Hamlin played into the round of 16 before falling to 19th-ranked Mayar Sherif Ahmed and Christine Maddox of Pepperdine, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7). Harris and Hamlin opened the day's competition with a straight set, 6-0, 6-4, win over Maryland's tandem of Kristina Hovsepyan and Alexandra Stanova. The Duke duo cruised in the first set, not dropping a game. Harris and Hamlin surrendered a game to Hovsepyan and Stanova to open the second set, but claimed four straight games to build a three-game lead. Hovsepyan and Stanova battled back to within a game, pulling the score to 4-3. After trading games, and with the score reading 5-4, Harris and Hamlin successfully closed out the match to reach the round of 16.
Harris and Hamlin's run would end in the round of 16. After dropping the first set, the Duke pair responded in the second set. With the score tied at 1-1, Harris and Hamlin won four of the next six games to earn a 5-3 lead. Although Ahmed and Maddox would pull within a game, Harris and Hamlin won the final game to take the set. Their momentum would not carry over to the 10-point tiebreak however, as Ahmed and Maddox clinched the match by a 10-7 margin.
Harris and Hamlin's record as a doubles pair moved to 6-1 on the season with Thursday's results.
