DURHAM, N.C. – Coming off helping lead the third-seeded Duke women's soccer team to wins over Illinois State and Northwestern, the Blue Devil tandem of
Toni Payne and
Ella Stevens have been named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week.
The duo combined to score three of the four goals for the Blue Devils over the weekend in a 3-1 win over the Redbirds and a 1-0 victory against Northwestern.
Payne, who hails from Birmingham, Ala., collected the first goal versus Illinois State to put the Blue Devils ahead, 1-0, early in the second half. After Illinois State evened the score, Payne came down and put Duke back ahead less than three minutes later with her ninth goal of the season. It would eventually be her third game-winner of the year.
In Sunday's NCAA third round match versus the Wildcats, Stevens punched in a the game-winning goal in the 33rd minute to move the Blue Devils into the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship. The goal was Stevens' team-best 10th of the season, which moved her into a second on Duke's single-season freshman goals list.
The Blue Devils will next face top-seeded West Virginia in the quarterfinals Saturday, Nov. 26 in Morgantown, W.Va., at 3 p.m., for a chance to advance to the NCAA College cup.
