DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke University women's soccer tandem of
Imani Dorsey and
Christina Gibbons has been selected Academic All-America following a vote by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The duo are the fifth and sixth Blue Devils to receive Academic All-America distinction joining only Mollie Pathman (2012), Laura Weinberg (2012), Maddy Haller (2011) and Rachel-Rose Cohen (2006, 2005). Gibbons received second team honors and becomes just the second Duke women's soccer standout to be voted second team or better (Cohen), while Dorsey was selected third team.
Gibbons, who hails from Raleigh, N.C., received CoSIDA Academic All-District III first team honors a year ago and is a three-time All-ACC Academic Team selection. A visual media studies major, Gibbons owns a 3.90 grade-point average and has been on the Dean's List at Duke in five of her six semesters.
The 5-6 defender/midfielder was selected the 2016 ACC Defensive Player of the Year along with First Team All-ACC. Gibbons was just the third Blue Devil to receive the defensive honor from the league as Duke has registered 11 shutouts on the season. A steady defender and dynamic offensive threat, Gibbons has totaled a team-high eight assists to go along with four goals, including two game-winners. The Hermann Trophy candidates' eight assists currently ranks tied second in the ACC.
A Second Team All-ACC selection in 2016, Dorsey received Third Team CoSIDA Academic All-America with a 3.72 grade-point average. A native of Elkridge, Md., Dorsey is majoring in environmental science and policy along with a marine science and conservation concentration. Dorsey was an All-ACC Academic Team selection in 2014 and Dean's List honors at Duke in the Spring of 2015. The 5-7 midfielder has been one of the top scorers in the ACC this season with seven goals and seven assists for 21 points, while notching three game-winning tallies.
The third-seeded Blue Devils (15-4-3) will travel to Morgantown, W.Va., Saturday, Nov. 26 to face top-seeded West Virginia (21-1-2) at 3 p.m., in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship. It marks the fifth time over the last six years Duke has advanced to the quarterfinals under the direction of head coach
Robbie Church.
