MALIBU, Calif. – Duke freshman Meible Chi reached the quarterfinal round of the singles draw and the semifinal round of the mixed doubles draw before her run at the 2016 Oracle ITA Masters event in Malibu, Calif., came to a close Friday evening.
In singles, Chi defeated her second nationally ranked opponent of the season, downing Cal's 62nd-ranked Denise Starr in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. The victory advanced the Weston, Fla., native to the quarterfinal round of the singles draw, where she faced UCLA's Ena Shibahara, the second-ranked freshman in the country. After dropping the first set, Chi battled back to force a third set against Shibahara, but ultimately fell, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5. With the result, Chi's overall singles record this fall moved to 9-2.
Chi and her mixed doubles partner, Ryotaro Matsumura of Kentucky, picked up their third win of the event Friday after defeating North Carolina's Sara Daavettila and UCLA's Gage Brymer, 6-2, advancing the team to the semifinals of the mixed doubles draw. In the semifinals, Chi and Matsumura put in a valiant effort, but suffered a 6-4 setback against the 10th-seeded pair of Baylor's Blair Shankle and Max Tchoutakian, drawing a close to the duo's competition.
