WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Senior Alyssa Smith and redshirt sophomore Christina Makarova capped off doubles play during day two of the Wake Forest Invitational on a high note Saturday, winning the A Doubles draw title.
Smith and Makarova maintained their perfect record as a doubles pair this season after defeating Georgia's team of Laura Patterson and Marta Gonzalez, 8-6, to win the final of the A Doubles draw. The Blue Devil duo posted back-to-back wins one day earlier to reach the final, and improved to 3-0 on the season with Saturday's victory.
Smith returned to action in the afternoon but was unable to pick up the win over Joanna Zalewski of Wake Forest, falling in three sets, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-1. With the loss, Smith's singles record dropped to 1-4 during the fall campaign.
The final round of singles, beginning at 9 a.m. Sunday, will mark the last competition of the Wake Forest Invitational.
