DURHAM, N.C. - In the latest installment of 1 on 1 with Coach K, the five-time national champion coach talks about one of the most epic comebacks in college basketball history on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the "Miracle Minute."
Down 10 at Maryland with less than a minute on the clock on Jan. 27, 2001, Duke, in Mike Krzyzewski's words, "just went nuts."
Jason Williams, who struggled for the first 39 minutes of the game, ignited the rally with a layup followed by a steal and a three-pointer. Current Duke assistant coach Nate James, playing not far from his Washington, D.C., home, sank two free throws in the final seconds to send the game into overtime.
With Duke leading by a score of 98-96 with just seconds left in the overtime period, Duke's Shane Battier preserved the victory with a block on a last-second shot attempt by Maryland's Juan Dixon.
The 2000-01 Duke squad was one of the greatest in program history, sharing the ACC regular-season title, winning the third in a streak of five consecutive ACC Tournament championships and claiming the program's third national championship.
On Jan. 27, 2001, in College Park, Md., the difference for Duke was, as Krzyzewski put it, "we had winners."
