ST. LOUIS -- Freshman Brandon Ingram was named the Wayman Tisdale National Freshman of the Week for games ending the week of Jan. 10. Ingram was selected by CBSSports.com's Matt Norlander, in partnership with the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA).
Later in the season, the USBWA will release a midseason watch list before naming finalists for the award. This season marks the first time a weekly national freshman of the week will be selected and each Tuesday through Feb. 23, a standout first-year player will be chosen for the honor.
The Kinston, N.C., native was a force on both ends of the floor as Duke won twice on the week, averaging 16.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 2.0 steals and 5.0 blocks per game in victories over Wake Forest and Virginia Tech. He shot 45.0 percent from the floor and 45.5 percent from beyond the arc in an average of 38.0 minutes over the two contests.
Ingram started the week with a 17-point effort in Duke's win at Wake Forest on Wednesday, bolstered by a 5-of-6 effort from the free throw line. He blocked four shots and picked up three steals – both game highs – in the win over the Demon Deacons.
In Saturday's win over Virginia Tech, Ingram scored an efficient 16 points, going 4-of-7 from the field and 3-of-6 from long distance, and tallied nine rebounds. Perhaps most impressively, he blocked a season-high six shots to tie for the sixth-most in a game by a Duke freshman. The six blocks also matched the most by an ACC player in a game this season.
Ingram is averaging a conference-best 3.33 blocks per game in ACC play, and ranks eighth in the league in overall competition with an average of 1.7 blocks per outing.
For the season, Ingram averaged 16.4 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.7 blocks, which makes him the lone freshman in Division I to eclipse the 16/6/1.5 combination in points, rebounds and blocks.
No. 9/6 Duke will be back in action Wednesday, visiting Clemson to begin a stretch that will see the Blue Devils play three games in six days. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. ET and the game will be televised on ESPN2.
