DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women's tennis team begins the 2015-16 season this weekend as the Blue Devils host the Duke James Bonk Invite at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C. The three-day tournament, scheduled to run from Friday, Sept. 12 through Sunday, Sept. 14, includes student-athletes from eight teams, including six teams that concluded the 2014-15 season ranked in the top-20 teams.
In addition to Duke, which ended last season ranked No. 19 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), No. 4 North Carolina, No. 6 Florida, No. 9 Virginia, No. 17 TCU and No. 20 Georgia Tech, Furman and NC State are also sending representatives to compete in the contest.
The tournament provides an early-season showcase of the nation's top talent. A total of eight singles players scheduled to participate in the invitational rank among the ITA's preseason top 125, with four competitors boasting top-50 preseason rankings, including Florida's 24th-ranked Brianna Morgan, Florida's 32nd-ranked Belinda Woolcock, Georgia Tech's 35th-ranked Paige Hourigan and Florida's 38th-ranked Kourtney Keegan. In addition to the ranked players in singles, two rookie Blue Devils, Ellyse Hamlin and Kaitlyn McCarthy, are also ranked as the sixth and ninth top-rated freshmen, respectively, according to the ITA.
Similar to singles, numerous doubles pairs attending the event rank among the nation's top 60 in the ITA's preseason poll. Seventh-ranked Kendal Woodard and Hourigan of Georgia Tech headline the doubles teams, while Duke is set to play its top-ranked doubles pair in senior Beatrice Capra and Hamlin, which received the No. 39 spot in the preseason poll.
In addition to Capra, Hamlin and McCarthy, juniors Chalena Scholl and Alyssa Smith, sophomores Rebecca Smaller and Samantha Harris and freshman Jessica Ho are all slated to represent Duke throughout the weekend.
The tournament is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. with women's doubles action, followed by singles play, which is slated for a 2 p.m. start.
