DURHAM, N.C. -- The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced its 2015 Division I preseason rankings Tuesday, with Duke placing two singles players, two doubles pairs and two freshmen on the national list. In addition to the preseason rankings, the ITA also released the names of competitors invited to participate in the 2015 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships, beginning Sept. 22 in Malibu, Calif.
Sophomore Samantha Harris, ranked 69th, headlines the Duke duo appearing on the singles list. Harris posted an impressive freshman season. The Melbourne, Australia, native earned 10 conference victories, becoming the sixth Blue Devil in Duke history to achieve such a feat, while also surpassing the 20-win plateau in singles play by earning 24 victories. Senior Beatrice Capra will open her final season at Duke ranked 71st by the ITA. A stalwart member of the Blue Devil squad, Capra sits 26 singles wins away from reaching 100 for her career. The Ellicott City, Md., native secured first team All-ACC honors and was named the inaugural Charles Hamilton Hargrave Most Valuable Player, awarded to a member of Duke's women's tennis team.
In doubles, the tandem of Capra and freshman Ellyse Hamlin garnered the No. 39 spot, while Harris and freshman Kaitlyn McCarthy appear at No. 42. Hamlin (No. 6) and McCarthy (No. 9) both earned spots on the Oracle/ITA Division I Women's National Newcomer/Freshmen Rankings.
Selections for the 2015 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships include Capra and Harris, who each earned a spot in the tournaments qualifying singles draw. Hamlin and McCarthy appear among the pre-qualifying selections. For the doubles competition, the duo of Capra and Hamlin was named qualifiers, while the pair of Harris and McCarthy were tabbed as pre-qualifiers.
Duke opens its fall slate of competition this Friday at the Duke Bonk Invite in Cary, N.C.
