PEACHTREE CORNERS, Ga. – Incoming freshman Kaitlyn McCarthy earned a spot in the 2015 US Open National Playoffs Championships after defeating Andie Daniell, 6-3, 7-5, Saturday, June 27, during the championship match of the US Open National Playoffs-Southern Qualifying Tournament held at Life Time Athletic in Peachtree Corners, Ga. The US Open National Playoffs Championships are set to run from Aug. 21-29 in New Haven, Conn.
McCarthy, a native of Cary, N.C., worked her way through the tournament with convincing, straight-set victories against each of the five opponents she faced over the six-day contest. McCarthy opened play with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Ja'cara Gillis before returning to the courts and downing Lori Flick, 6-1, 6-0, in a round of 16 matchup. In the quarterfinal stage, McCarthy dispensed of Angela McGahee, 6-3, 6-0, before a 6-0, 6-1 win over Amanda Rebol in the semifinal round clinched a spot for McCarthy in the championship match. McCarthy carried the momentum from her previous matches into the final, defeating Daniell to secure the title. McCarthy closed the match in spectacular fashion, earning the final two points of the contest with back-to-back aces.
“I've been working on my serve,” McCarthy said. “Tyus Jones, who's on the Duke basketball team, has been an inspiration. He shoots like 90 percent on his free throws. In free throws you are all on your own. It's a lot like serving.”
The US Open National Playoffs men's and women's singles champions earn a wild card into the US Open Qualifying Tournament, held the week prior to the US Open. The US Open National Playoffs mixed doubles and men's and women's champions receive a wild card into the main draws of the 2015 US Open.
The United States Tennis Association (USTA) created the US Open National Playoffs to expand the footprint of the US Open to cities nationwide by providing the opportunity for all players 14 years of age and older to earn a berth into the US Open.
