DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke men's tennis team ended the 2014-15 season standing 10th in the final Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division I team rankings. The Blue Devils finished among the top 15 teams in the country for the sixth consecutive year and within the top 10 for the third time in four years.
The Blue Devils went 24-7 this year, reaching the 20-win plateau for the sixth consecutive season, the second-longest streak in program history, behind only 10 such campaigns from 1992-2001. Duke also posted an 8-4 mark in ACC play, capturing eight or more league wins for the sixth consecutive season, the longest stretch for the Blue Devils since a seven-year run from 1997-2003.
Duke was ranked among the nation's top 12 programs for the duration of the spring season. Prior to the Blue Devils' ACC opener against Virginia Tech in March, Duke was ranked No. 2 in the country. It was the highest ranking for the Blue Devils since checking in at No. 2 for the week of March 14, 2000.
In May, the Blue Devils made their fifth NCAA Team Championship round of 16 appearance in the last six years with a trip to Waco, Texas, to take on No. 7 seed USC. Duke defeated South Carolina State 5-0 and No. 23 Stanford 4-1 at the Durham Regional to earn a trip to the third round of the NCAA's main event.
Individually, Duke had three players reach 100 career singles wins during the 2014-15 campaign, tied for the most in a year in program history. Senior Raphael Hemmeler, redshirt senior Chris Mengel and senior Jason Tahir all reached the 100-win plateau.
Head coach Ramsey Smith reached an individual milestone with the 150th win of his career with a 4-0 victory against Miami in the first round of the ACC Championship on April 23. Smith is the fourth coach in Duke history to record at least 150 victories, joining Jay Lapidus (373-127/1991-2008), John LeBar (184-88/1971-82) and Steve Strome (160-70/1983-90).
The Blue Devils were well represented in the ITA Carolina Region awards with three winners. Hemmeler was named the Farnsworth Senior Player of the Year, Tahir was voted Senior Most Improved Player and freshman Nicolas Alvarez received the Player to Watch Award.
The Oracle/ITA national singles and doubles rankings and regional team, singles and doubles rankings will be published on June 3.
