DURHAM, N.C. -- Former Blue Devil Shane Battier joins a class of five individuals that comprise the College Sports Information Directors of America's (CoSIDA) Capital One Academic All-America 2015 Hall of Fame class, as announced by the organization Tuesday. Created in 1988, the Capital One Academic All-America Hall of Fame class is made up of 137 members.
Battier, a standout basketball player who is one of 13 former Duke players to have his jersey retired, is joined by Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel, Olympic women's hockey medalist Angela Ruggiero, Ohio State team physician Dr. Grant Jones and United States Congressman Rep. Lee Hamilton (D-Indiana) as members of this year's hall of fame class. The five individuals will be inducted into the Academic All-America Hall of Fame at CoSIDA's annual convention in Orlando, Fla., Monday, June 15, at the organization's sixth annual Capital One Hall of Fame Ceremony.
Battier excelled both in the classroom and on the court during his time at Duke. Academically, Battier thrived, being named the Academic All-America of the Year in 2001, a Verizon Academic All-America and a two time first team GTE Academic All-America.
During his playing years, Battier helped guide Duke to a national title in 2001, earning consensus National Player of the Year honors and first team All-America accolades along the way. Following the national championship, Battier was drafted sixth overall in the 2001 National Basketball Association draft by the Memphis Grizzlies. Battier eventually became a member of the Miami Heat in 2012, assisting the team in earning back-to-back NBA titles in 2012 and 2013.
Battier currently serves as a college basketball analyst on ESPN.
