DURHAM, N.C. – Duke received the No. 1 seed in the South Region and will face the winner of the game between North Florida and Robert Morris in the second round of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament Friday, March 20 in Charlotte, N.C. Friday's game will tip at 7:10 pm on CBS with Jim Nantz, Bill Raftery, Grant Hill and Tracy Wolfson calling the action.
Duke (29-4), ranked No. 2 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll and No. 6 in the NCAA RPI, will be playing in its 20th consecutive NCAA Tournament. The Blue Devils are 45-9 in the tournament as a No. 1 seed and 12-0 against the No. 16 seed. Duke has never faced either of its potential opponents.
The NCAA committee awarded Duke a No. 1 seed for the first time since 2011 when the Blue Devils advanced to the West Regional semifinal. Duke also earned No. 1 seeds in 1986, 1992, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2010 and 2011. The Blue Devils reached the NCAA Championship five times as a No. 1 seed (1986, 1992, 1999, 2001 and 2010).
Duke is 99-34 all-time in the tournament with national championships in 1991, 1992, 2001 and 2010. Head coach Mike Krzyzewski is the NCAA's all-time leader in tournament victories, posting an 82-26 record in his 35 seasons at Duke.
Gonzaga received the No. 2 seed in the South Region, followed by No. 3 Iowa State, No. 4 Georgetown and No. 5 Utah. A win over North Florida or Robert Morris would propel Duke to the NCAA Third Round where they would face the winner of eighth-seeded San Diego State and ninth-seeded St. John's.
The Blue Devils fell, 74-64, to No. 11 Notre Dame Friday in the semifinal round of the conference tournament. That capped a regular season in which Duke went 15-3 in ACC play.
