DURHAM, N.C. – The Naismith Trophy announced the top 30 midseason candidates for the National Player of the Year Wednesday with Duke University senior
Elizabeth Williams one of the honorees.
A center from Virginia Beach, Va., Williams is averaging 14.8 points, 8.4 rebounds, 3.0 blocks, 2.5 assists and 1.6 steals per game heading into the Virginia contest Thursday at 7:00 p.m. She currently ranks second in the ACC and 18th nationally in blocks per game. Williams owns 397 swats for her career to rank 11th on the NCAA's all-time list, and is 37 blocks shy of the ACC career record held by former Blue Devil Alison Bales (434). In addition, she is fourth on Duke's all-time scoring list with 1,816 points over her four seasons.
Williams, a three-time Associated Press and ACC Defensive Player of the Year, has totaled seven double-doubles on the season. She currently ranks 11th in scoring, seventh in rebounding, 10th in field goal percentage (51.4) and second in the ACC in blocked shots. Williams needs 25 rebounds to become the second Blue Devil in school history to pull down 1,000 boards.
Of the 30 candidates, Williams is one of six ACC players selected – Adut Bulgak (Florida State), Kaela Davis (Georgia Tech), Allisha Gray (North Carolina), Jewell Loyd (Notre Dame) and Brianna Turner (Notre Dame).
